David Bowie is the self-titled debut studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 1 June 1967, on Deram Records. Its style and content bears little overt resemblance to the type of music that he was later known for, such as the folk rock influenced Space Oddity or the glam rock of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. NME critics Roy Carr and Charles Shaar Murray have said, a listener strictly accustomed to David Bowie in his assorted '70s guises would probably. David Bowie - David Bowie. When David Bowie began writing songs for Hunky Dory, in 1970, he had little to show for the six years he spent trying to make it as a singer. His first three albums had tanked, and he didnt have a record deal. Then, in January 1971, Bowie arrived in the United States for a three-week promotional tour, a journey that broadened his universe and inspired his first great artistic statement. Bowie assembled a band including guitarist Mick Ronson and future Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman that could amplify his folk tunes into glammy, grandiose rockers. We went into the studio, and I had total freedom to do whatever I liked, Wakeman said. Bowie's obsession with multiple identities is charted in the title track of album number three, perhaps best exemplified through its instantly recognisable repeated riff that, like the singer, takes on new sounds while ultimately remaining the same. The Man Who Sold the World could well have heralded Bowie's willingness to explore his personality more physically than his songs before suggested Space Oddity, etc. Picking a favourite track from Bowies final album Blackstar released just days before the singers death is a thankless task. Upon a revisit, however, its Girl Loves Me that wins, somehow contending with his classic tracks in the boldness stakes
