After achieving early underground fame there, the band had their commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s and sustained it until the early 1990s, when they stopped releasing new recorded output in protest against their record company WEA. Currently, the band are a touring outfit only. The group has released three original studio albums, the last of which was released in 1990. Each album was recorded by a different line-up singer. First released in 1985 before the split between Eldritch and Hussey leading to Hussey's creation of the Mission, this remastered reissue still sounds as fresh as ever. Sisters of Mercy could have been massive, and later releases hinted at that possibility, but personnel and label disputes stalled them, so this is the first of a tragically short three-album career. Often incorrectly labeled as goth, this is post-punk rock: meaty, bombastic and quite unlike anything else released at the time. 1987 saw the return of The Sisters with the second album, 'Floodland'. It marked a shift away from guitars-based rock towards keyboard-oriented explorations as pioneered in album was produced by Eldritch and Larry Alexander, with contributions from Jim Steinman on two songs. Bass player, Patricia Morrison subsequently became a member of the band for the release of the album, although it is claimed by Eldritch she didn't contribute to the album whatsoever.
