But even die-hard reggae fans may scratch their heads when faced with a collection from the vaults of Phase One, a small label that was founded by producer Roy Francis in 1977. During its relatively brief sojourn in the Jamaican marketplace, Phase One became known for the quality of its 12 discomix releases by such artists as Jah Berry and the Chantells at one time its roster even included such A-list figures as the Heptones and Donald Tabby Shaw of the Mighty Diamonds. Watch the video for Daily News from Jah Berry's We Are Getting Bad: The Sound of Phase One for free, and see the artwork, lyrics and similar had Phase 1's music recorded at the legendary Channel 1 and Joe Gibbs studios, with Errol Thompson and JoJo Hoo Kim as engineers. Most of the artists weren't the ones that broke internationally but this release highlights some that did such as the Heptones and Tabby Diamond from the Mighty Diamonds, both of which turn in excellent tracks here. While the others may have been sourced from vinyl, Motion put forth great effort to ensure that the sound quality of this disc did not suffer. Between this compilation and Blood and Fire's, Phase 1's music can be heard by a new generation of reggae fans and I don't think anyone would be disappointed. Daily - Hey You.
