Album

Miss Julie is a British opera in two acts by William Alwyn with a libretto by the composer. His second and final opera, premiered in 1977 as a radio broadcast, Alwyn based his opera on the 1888 play Miss Julie by Swedish playwright August Strindberg. The opera received its premiere as a BBC Radio 3 broadcast on 16 July 1977, from a studio recording made on 17 February 1977 in Brent Town Hall. Its first stage production was in 1992 at the Ballerup Theatre in Copenhagen, by Opera-Fabrikken. The first UK. Album 2006 Utworów: 43. Wypróbuj bez opłat. Alwyn understands, articulates, and puts into practice a principle of opera that eludes many contemporary opera composers. While the text is critical, its setting must be undergirded by a compelling musical logic reflecting the deep psychology of what is happening in the characters' minds and on stage, rather than simply illustrating the words being sung. They are ably accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Vilem Tausky. The sound is vivid, allowing vocal, and instrumental details to emerge with clarity. Track Listing - Disc 1. Whatever made William Alwyn think he could make an opera out of Strindberg's stark tragedy Where the Swede succeeded in forging an elemental drama out of a single skirmish in the sexclass war using, as he boasted, 'just three characters, a table, two chairs and no sunrise' and then compressed it into an unbroken 90-minute span, the Englishman padded it out to two acts and two hours of music plus interval, added. William Alwyn was his own librettist for Miss Julie, an opera based on the play by August Strindberg. Miss Julie was first performed for a BBC recording in February 1977 broadcast in July that year. Alwyn first considered Miss Julie in the 1930s. In 1954 he began work on the opera in conjunction with Christopher Hassall, yet the collaboration was not a fruitful one, so Alwyn did the job himself, with a laudable emphasis on condensing the text so that everything makes its point.
